Our Story

La Soufflerie is a family-owned and operated company based in Paris created by wife and husband team, Valentina and Sébastien Nobile. Though they started with vases, they now produce a full range of glassware along with plaster, terracotta pieces, and candles.

Sébastien is a Swiss-French mold maker who applies his savoir-faire of casting and sculpture to glassblowing. He has his own company called Moulage et Patine which creates beautiful plaster pieces for numerous museums, boutiques, hotels, and private clients around the world. Sébastien creates all of our plaster pieces in his studio in the 15th arrondissement! He also shares his skills as a teacher at Les Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris.

Valentina is an Italian-American who grew up in Paris. She attended NYU where she received a master’s degree in Art History and Visual Arts. She then divided her time between New York, Milan, and Paris working for 10 years as an independent artist creating many paintings, videos, and photographs. In parallel, she has worked in the advertising industry as a production manager where she gained the experience she utilizes in her own company today.

Valentina and Sébastien design and create every model themselves. They find their inspiration in classic designs, everyday objects, and all the people who are part of their lives. Many of the pieces are named after family members, friends, clients, and team members. Thibaut and Chiara are named after their children. Anjeanette and Sandra are named after a friend and a team member. “ We like to keep it all in the family because family is what means the most to us. “

Sébastien had been dabbling in the art of glassblowing when he realized that 100% mouth-blown glass, created without the use of any machinery, was a dying art. At the time, there were fewer than five professional glassblowers in the Paris region. Upon learning this, Valentina and Sébastien decided to start La Soufflerie as a non-profit organization that gives all its proceeds back to the glassblowers to keep the art alive and support its craftsmen.

They started in 2009 by creating 4 vases from recycled glass, loading them on the back of their bikes, and riding around Paris to sell them to local flower shops. The vases sold out in a day!  The couple also received great feedback as to what kind of vases customers needed. Sébastien would then go back to the glass-blowing studio in the 18th arrondissement to create these upscaled designs. Then it was back on his bike with a trolley attached, to deliver his new creations.

La Soufflerie has grown since 2009 and has become part of a parent company, called S&V Nobile, also created by Sébastien and Valentina. S&V Nobile (aka La Soufflerie) has been adding a full range of candles, terracotta, plaster, wood, and other handmade products to its glassware designs. They also collaborate with other brands and designers on special productions. Over the years, Valentina and Sébastien have opened several small glass-blowing studios around the world in the hope of maintaining their passion for 100% mouth-blown glass, which requires no use of machinery, only ancient craftsmanship.

Our non-profit organization still exists under the name of Association La Soufflerie. Find out more about it on our savoir-faire page.

Candle care

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 1/2-cm in length. This allows the candle to burn more slowly and also avoid unsightly black smoke marks around the edge of the glass.

Every time you burn your La Soufflerie candle, allow it to burn at least until the whole top of the candle is liquid. This will help your candle burn more evenly for each burning session.

After blowing out your candle, re-center and straighten the wick.
When using your candlestick holder, do not let the flame touch the glass. Blow the candle out once it gets close to the candle stick holder. Do not place your candle on a cool surface like marble. If the bottom of the hot candle comes in contact with a cold material, the glass may crack.

Do not burn your candle all the way down. Leave at least 1/2-cm of wax in the container to avoid cracking the bottom.Once you have finished burning your candle, hand wash with warm water and soap until the dried wax melts away. You now have a new La Soufflerie piece to use!

Cleaning care

All plaster and terracotta pieces are not suitable for use with water. You can dust each piece with a dry cloth.

General information

These are entirely made by hand and each creation is unique. Therefore, there may be a slight variation in color, texture, and size between each piece (approximately 1cm-2cm from piece to piece). On the base of each item, you can feel the pontil mark left by the glassblower’s cane. The presence of this mark indicates that the glass was blown freehand. This is the beauty of handmade.

Cleaning care

We do recommend handwashing as much as possible to avoid scratches from the dishwasher and to keep the glass sparkling. But, know that our glassware is dishwasher resistant and can be cleaned in the dishwasher

Colored glass

Pigmented glass is mixed into the furnace during the glassblowing. This means that the glass itself is colored instead of painted. Our glass is durable and no changes or fading occur with continued use over time.
